Innovative Coolroom Technologies: What’s New?

Coolroom technologies have advanced over the years to create more effective cold storage solutions for both perishable goods and those that need to be stored at optimum temperatures. Here are some new and innovative coolroom technologies that you may not be aware of but that are changing the industry for the future.

Monitoring Temperature in Real Time

State-of-the-art sensors are now being used in coolrooms and freezer rooms that constantly monitor the temperature and adjust the cooling system as needed. This is particularly useful if your coolroom has a lot of traffic going in and out because opening the door constantly can have a big effect on the internal temperature.

The Use Of Phase Change Materials

These are substances that absorb and then release thermal energy and are commonly used in the packaging of things like pharmaceuticals. They have the ability to maintain a constant temperature of the goods within the packaging even while these are being transported from one place to another.

Variable Frequency Drives

Variable frequency drives are highly efficient and have a high-performance cooling capacity. These units are responsible for starting, stopping and accelerating the speed of the refrigerator motor as and when it’s necessary to do so. This creates a much more effective and energy-efficient cooling system.

Cold Pallet Moving Robots

These automated robots are used within large cold storage facilities to move goods around and can operate at temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. They can work around the clock to reduce the need for staff to be constantly exposed to freezing temperatures.

Modular Insulated Wall Systems

Modern insulated wall panels can be used to create a coolroom space anywhere in a warehouse where temperature-sensitive goods are being stored. These modular wall panels just lock together and can be easily dismantled and moved to another location. This is particularly useful for warehouses that need to store different types of goods requiring different levels of temperature control.

High-Density Storage Systems For Coolrooms

High-density storage systems are designed to store goods vertically on racks which eliminates the need for pallet storage. This also means that there’s no need for the large aisles that were traditionally needed to allow forklifts in and out of a cold storage facility.

The Use Of Cryogenic Cooling

Commonly, blast freezers are used to lower the temperature of goods to be stored, quickly and effectively. On the other hand, cryogenic cooling uses a combination of carbon dioxide, liquid nitrogen, and other substances to lower the temperature of sensitive goods like medicines as low as minus 150 degrees Celsius.

Radio Frequency Identification Devices

RFIDs are tags that are applied to products in cold storage and then totally integrated into the warehouse management system. This allows the tracking of every item and ensures that everything is being stored at the correct temperature, not only while in storage but also while being transported from one facility to the next.

There’s no doubt that these innovative new coolroom technologies will make it much easier and more efficient to store goods at just the right temperature while reducing labour intensity and energy costs.
